Babasaheb Apte (April 29, 1903 – 1971), born Umakant Keshav Apte, was a monumental Indian scholar, dedicated patriot, and legendary foundational leader who served as the very first official full-time volunteer (Pracharak) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Born in Yeotmal in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, he began his career as a passionate school teacher but resigned in protest when prohibited from honoring national icons. In 1924, he moved to Nagpur and formed a revolutionary student group that completely merged into the RSS after meeting its founder, Dr. K.B. Hedgewar. Known for his absolute detachment from material comforts, simple lifestyle, and profound eloquence, Babasaheb Apte traveled tirelessly across various states for decades, inspiring thousands of youths—including future national leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee—to dedicate their lives to character building and national reconstruction.
